ATV and Quad Bike Instructor Training

We've added a couple of new pages to the Beyond4x4 site covering ATV Instructor Training and Quad Bike Instructor Training.

Unlike with the 4x4 training, instructors aren't actually required to be DSA ADIs, so these pages outline both the in-house and nationally recognised certification options open to candidates, along with the process and the qualifications required for entry onto the courses.

4x4 Instructor Training

As always, there's a debate surrounding what qualifications a 4x4 instructor should hold, so we have done our research and updated our comprehensive 4x4 Instructor Training article on the Beyond 4x4 website.

Yes, 4x4 Instructors still need to be DSA ADIs, they still need a H&S qualification, a First Aid qualification, a 4x4 Operator's qualification, 5 years of experience off-road driving and a comprehensive knowledge of a wide range of off-road vehicles.

4x4 Training Devon

As many of you may know, we're now bringing our full range of off-road driver and ATV rider training courses to Devon. 4x4 Training in Devon can be run at the client's site, if suitable, or at our Lantra-Awards Approved off-road training venue in the north of the county.

We can provide full Sit-In and Sit-Astride ATV certification across Devon and the south-west, including Cornwall, Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire. We can also provide 4x4 familiarisation in the workplace, with the more extensive and specialised off-road training being undertaken at our site.

Quad Bike and ATV Training Devon, Dorset & Somerset

We've been running training courses for off-road drivers, ATV and Quad Bike operators across the South West of England for several years now, but we now have a dedicated base in the area. This means that we can visit your riders and drivers in the workplace more simply, for shorter courses and at shorter notice if required.

Lantra ATV Training

We've just spent a wonderful week training the gardeners, forestry and game staff at Holkham Hall. Quad bikes featured on a few days, but one of the best bits of the week was a day of Sit-In ATV Training. The staff were looking to replace their John Deere Gator, so we were lucky enough to have the Gator, a JCB Workmax, a Polaris Ranger and a Kawasaki Mule to compare side by side.

Lantra ATV Training

There were pros and cons for all the vehicles and they all have a niche in which they fit, so I won't pick a favourite, but having the chance to test each vehicle was invaluable.

Quad Bike Gritter and Snowplough ATV training

Due to the unexpected snow over this winter, several organisations have recently contacted us regarding training their employees in how to safely operate a quad bike, with a trailed gritter and attached snowplough.

We have been running these courses for clients across the UK. The Lantra-Awards Sit-Astride ATV course includes the option for trailed equipment, and attachments like the snowplough. It also includes the option for a 'level ground only' course, which can often be undertaken at your workplace. This minimises disruption, and eliminates staff travel and overtime requirements, as the course can be completed in one day.

However, we have found that many of the quad bikes and snowploughs have not been particularly suitable for the job, with some suppliers selling companies manually clutched bikes, bikes which are not road legal, despite being sold as such, and other bikes simply being unsuitable for the purpose. Often, the cheaper snowploughs supplied have simply not been able to deal with the job they were sold for. We have also been disappointed to find that suppliers (who have seen a niche in the market and jumped at it) have been giving some very odd advice, sometimes with serious legal and H&S implications.
